FROM WEEKEND WARRIORS TO STUDENT ATHLETES TO ELITE LEVEL PROFESSIONLS, THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS OF SPORTS AND EXCERCISE CAN BE OUTWEIGHED BY THE TOLL OF IMPACT, OVERUSE, AND ACUTE INJURY TO THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM.
On the sidelines, in the dugout, and in the locker rooms and training facilities, Dr. Wilkerson works to keep athletes in top condition, minimizing the impact of injuries or other physical ailments that can compromise their performance on the field or court. Our medical staff works closely with the sports medicine programs of several area high schools and local universities. We also provide independent consultation and treatment of elite professional athletes.
Advances in orthopedic medicine have facilitated remarkable improvements in our ability to treat common sports related injuries. Damage that once meant the end of a patient’s ability to participate in a sport or other physical activity now can be repaired with little of no loss of function. Dr. Wilkerson is a recognized expert in cartilage transplantation to joints damaged by trauma. And in many cases, these surgical repairs are performed through the use of minimally invasive arthroscopic and microsurgical techniques, helping to reduce recovery time.
Another advantage to receiving sports medicine treatment at Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Excellence of Miami is our close coordination with physical therapists and rehabilitation services. We provide a seamless coordination of care between the orthopaedic surgeon and the rehabilitation professionals whose work is a crucial part of the recovery process and the return to normal activity.
